One of the biggest misconceptions about Persian cats is that they require hours of daily grooming.

I'll let you in on a little secret...

If you are not maintaining a full show coat and simply want a beautiful companion, Persians actually require far less maintenance than many people expect, aside from routine eye care.

Why Persians Mat

Persians have greasy skin and coats. Grease causes the hair to stick together rather than fall away during the shedding process. Grease and dead coat combine to create mats, which lead to pelts. It then follows that regular removal of grease and dead coat prevents tangles, which prevents mats, which prevents pelting.

If a Persian receives a good degreasing bath on a regular basis (4-6 weeks for most cats) and the coat is thoroughly blown out with a high velocity dryer, matting becomes a thing of the past.  

Don’t forget-It is important to also comb out the coat thoroughly once it is dry, to remove any loose hair that is still hanging around.

In fact, many professionals cat groomers (especially those trained by the National Cat Groomers Institute) have a guarantee that they offer to all clients: if they allow them to groom their cat at the prescribed frequency (normally 4-6 weeks), they guarantee their cat will never gets matted or pelted.

If the spacing between grooms is appropriate and the groomer does their job correctly, a cat owner will not have to do any at-home “grooming” besides eye maintenance in between grooming sessions.

Why Combing Alone Isn't Enough

Think of it like brushing your own hair. Brushing greasy hair doesn't make it clean—it simply spreads the oils around. The same principle applies to a Persian's coat.

Comb all you want, but simply combing a cat’s coat out does little to remove the mat-causing factors (grease and loose hair). Combing a greasy, icky coat simply moves the grease and loose hair around, creating an even bigger problem over time.

The key to having a mat free Persian really is having a properly clean Persian.

Persians do not deserve their reputation for being impossibly high maintenance.

The secret is not spending hours with a comb — it is understanding what causes mats in the first place.

A clean coat sheds properly, stays healthier, and is dramatically easier to maintain between baths.
